In the early 20th century, amidst the pervasive racial segregation and discrimination in the United States, a group of ten visionary Black students at Indiana University confronted the injustice they faced by uniting to form Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated on January 5, 1911. Founded on the principles of ACHIEVEMENT, the Fraternity sought to elevate the consciousness of Black collegians, fostering a bond of brotherhood built upon culture, honor, and patriotism. This enduring legacy of excellence continues to inspire and empower young men through the Fraternity’s guiding service programs.
One of the most impactful of these programs is the Guide Right Program, established in 1922 as Kappa Alpha Psi’s premier national service initiative. Its mission is to provide mentorship and guidance to youth, helping them navigate educational and career paths while fostering a strong sense of community responsibility. Through this program, Kappa Alpha Psi has been a steadfast advocate for youth empowerment, assisting them in their educational pursuits, career development, and personal growth.
The Kappa League was founded on February 12, 1969, by the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc., at Alain LeRoy Locke High School. With the formal adoption of the program by the Grand Chapter in 1970, Kappa League became a cornerstone of the Fraternity’s commitment to youth leadership and empowerment. Inspired by the vision of Mel L. Davis and Edgar H. Bishop, the Kappa League aims to prepare young men—particularly those of color—to become leaders who impact and influence their communities in positive ways.
