Phase VI - Financial Workshop

For the first time ever, Leaguers took on the world of finance with a virtual stock challenge! Over the course of one week, they researched, bought, and tracked stocks like Lockheed, Spotify, Amazon, Apple, Bitcoin, and more, all in an effort to get the best return on investment. 💰

The journey didn’t stop there—Leaguers also participated in an insightful workshop with Brother Craddock of Black Men in Tech, where they learned the ins and outs of stocks. 📊 The biggest takeaway? Buy low, sell high 🏦. It’s a classic lesson, but seeing it play out in real-time was a game changer for these young minds.

The winner of the stock challenge was Freshman Delegate Davidson, who earned $100 🎉, followed by Sophomore Delegate Lara and 7th grader Hagan.

Next, the Leaguers faced the ultimate test: balancing a federal budget and attempting to reduce the national debt in a hands-on simulator. It was a tough challenge for both teams, as neither could eliminate the deficit or generate a surplus.

  • Team 1’s strategy of taxing the top 1% led to a sufficient reduction in the debt, but that was the extent of their agreement.

  • Team 2 reflected Congress in their inability to agree on cost-cutting measures, struggling with tough negotiations over taxes, military spending, healthcare, natural resources, and education.

A real-world challenge that highlighted the complexities of governance and financial decision-making!
